Emily Hess: Women and Politics in American History: A Mother, A Writer, and An Activist
In the late twentieth century, American society observed the rise of several women to prominent positions in national politics - Sandra Day O'Connor, Condoleezza Rice, Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi. Women in the United States, however, have always engaged in the political sphere though in less traditional forms. From rearing future presidents to engaging in political discourse through popular literature, this talk will examine women like Abigail Adams, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Alice Paul who influenced, inspired and demanded change in American political society.
